Home Area Network (HAN) continues to expand as a complex ecosystem, even though intuitiveness should be its primary goal since it is for everyone. Recent Smart Grid activities mandate a truly basic solution. This paper will analyze various HAN parameters and propose optimum choices that lead to a concise building block module for linking current technology islands together to form a long term homogeneous system manageable by consumer. This module may be produced with merchant ICs, thus immediately realizable without development efforts. This solution is time invariant because implementation components are mature, while performances demanded by residential customers appear to have reached a plateau for the foreseeable future.
