Touch sensor technology goes back many years, but, it is the explosion of handheld display based devices that has been spawning renewed interest and development in this technology. Clever innovations and research have paid off and new classes of more advanced and intelligent user interfaces now offer improved sensitivity, and include gestures as well as transparent and opaque zones. Chip-makers are doing a lot of the heavy lifting by integrating well engineered solutions into their embedded systems offerings. This paper looks at capacitive touch technology and what options designers have for integrating it into their designs and applications.
