Choices made during the design phase can impact 70% of the life cycle cost of a new product. Challenged with ever-shorter time-to-market requirements, design teams need to understand and mitigate against supply chain risks during the design process. By using a sound ‘Design to Cost’ methodology, backed with real-time and accurate view of component cost and supply chain information at design time, designer teams are able to make the best component design-in choices upfront. This paper explores Design-to-Cost as a methodology, and the systems around it that can make it possible for engineers to see into the component supply chain and let it shape component selection.
