While the purpose of this paper is devoted
to the definition of an optimum MAC protocol for A/V streaming
applications and the comparison of the IEEE P802.15.3, HiperLAN2
Direct Mode, and MMAC HiSWAN standards in meeting those
requirements, the fact and the matter remains that this selection
process cannot be dissociated from a PHY discussion that has to be
run in parallel. Accordingly, one section of this paper also
examines how a disruptive PHY technology, called Ultra-Wideband (UWB),
can complement but also impact the selected MAC protocol. Finally,
this paper lays the foundations for recommending a unified WPAN
standard for multimedia applications.
