Video compression technology has been around for many decades and despite all the different codecs available in the market today, the basics of compression technology remain unchanged. What distinguishes one codec from another are the technology tools that are employed (or skipped) to serve different application and market needs. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the freshly minted video compression standard of a joint effort of the ITU-T and ISO/IEC standardization bodies, is such a technology and its arrival could not have come at a more opportune time. This paper highlights some of the key technologies behind this new codec and describes HEVC implementation on TI’s KeyStone platform.
