The universal appeal of 802.11 Wireless LA N (WLAN) has energized a rapidly growing and important market that now serves the data networking needs of consumers, businesses and public wireless service subscribers. There is extraordinary momentum to adapt this pervasive technology to new applications. However, existing WLAN technology is not keeping up with all these new uses.
Faced with this situation, the IEEE 802.11n Task Group was formed for the purpose of increasing WLAN throughput above 100Mbps, maintaining backward compatibility to existing 802.11a-b-g devices, raising spectral efficiency to at least 3bits/sec/Hz, and maximizing range. Throughput is specified at the MAC-layer, so radio physical layer (PHY) data rate must be near 150Mbps. These lofty goals for the next generation of WLAN chipsets are now achievable with proven technology.
