The embedded technology industry has traditionally relied upon RISC processor platforms. However, as electronic appliances become increasingly sophisticated and more vulnerable to security problems, there is a growing need for a platform architecture that meets the demands of these changes, yet retains the size and power properties of the RISC architecture.

This paper defines the requirements of the embedded industry and introduces the 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor. This new processor, with its maximum design power of just 1 watt and idle power consumption of just 0.1 watt (100mW), can provide the performance, connectivity and software benefits of the x86 platform and, for the first time, can enable full-featured sub-10W x86 platforms.
