Signaling System #7 (SS7) is a fundamental part of today’s telecommunications networks worldwide and will continue to be critical for packet-based next-generation networks in the future. The SS7 protocol is used almost universally inside the world’s telephone networks to provide call control and to support Intelligent Networking (IN) applications, and is a key element of many types of telecommunications equipment, including enhanced services platforms, voice over IP (VoIP) gateways, and central office (CO) switching platforms.

This white paper provides an overview of the SS7 protocol and the Intelligent Network, and describes several typical SS7 applications and the benefits of using NMS Communications’ enabling technologies.
