There is a battle brewing among a relatively small number of transceiver chip vendors over the nascent 10Gb twisted-pair Ethernet PHY market. Precipitated in large part by the ratification of the IEEE 802.3an (10GBASE-T) standard in June of 2006 (although
work on 10Gb copper transceivers began much earlier), and fueled by substantial and growing demand for more bandwidth in the data center, the battle is for nothing less than market dominance. The critical issue is the module, or more specifically X2 and XFP and coming in the future the new, more compact SFP+ modules that provide equipment OEMs and IT managers a flexible, field-configurable deployment mechanism.
