Often times during the development phase, the PCB layout design turn around time is taken for granted. The conventional process of time estimation solely depends on the past experience of the layout designer. In order to complete the design on time, some critical review stages gets shrunk which leads to layout related design problems. Quite often questions related to “the level of complexity involved in PCB design” are answered from manufacturability stand point and not from the design stand point. This article attempts to formulate and suggest a quantitative approach on assessing time for new design layouts, thereby enabling a more data based time estimation rather than being empirical.
