Declining endurance in flash memory is impacting embedded product lifetimes. This paper expands on the study results presented in Part 1 to include additional software techniques. It shows how alternative file systems and file system configurations can significantly improve both media life and performance in a Linux/Android environment. Using a recent smart grid meter project as an example, the paper documents the real world increases in endurance achieved by adding FlashFXe to Datalight Reliance Nitro. Includes test results using both standard benchmarks and proprietary tests for performance, write amplification and erase counts using ext4 and Datalight Reliance Nitro.
