Look Under the Hood of the dsPIC (Digital Signal Controller)
The MCUs and DSPs of today do incorporate the latest technological advances, but at times this has come at the cost of simplistic ease-of-use and flexibility. Today, Flash program memory is commonly found on MCUs. However, it is not common on DSPs. MIPS metrics are not measured in single digits but in double digits. Microchip’s 16-bit DSC offers the best of both worlds—30 MIPS of simplistic flexible power, combined with industry-leading reliable Flash program memory, a rich and flexible easy-to-use peripheral set and a modern easy-to-usetools suite. Microchip did not loose sight of what today’s embedded designer needs when the 16-bit dsPIC DSC was designed. This paper takes a closer look at the dsPIC DSC.
