Infusion Pump Advancement
An infusion pump is a device that delivers fluids, including nutrients and medications, into a patient’s body in a controlled manner. While the primary function of an infusion pump is treatment, they also perform the function of Keep Vein Open (KVO) in which extremely low flow rates, in the range of 0.5-5mL/Hr, are used for the benign purpose of keeping an IV site unobstructed. Greater product performance and flexibility across product lines are pushing medical device manufactures towards complete solutions that can encompass several of the manufacturer’s infusion products. This paper examines various National Semiconductor and Freescale solutions and technologies available to infusion pump manufacturers—including the Freescale ColdFire core and MCF51 controller family, BLDC/PMSM motor control, High/Low MosFet Drivers, Bridge Drivers and various operational amplifiers.
