This paper describes how Serial RapidIO-enabled 10G serial buffers boost performance and reduce costs of DSP-intensive systems. When deployed in conjunction with a pre-processing switch (PPS), the 10G serial buffer can dramatically increase system performance by over 20 percent. In real-world applications, designers estimate that this solution set could reduce the bill of materials by 50 to 75 percent compared with alternative approaches. While the example used in this paper is a 3G cellular base station, the 10G serial buffer and PPS deliver the same benefits in any application that employs DSP clusters, such as medical imaging, high-speed communications, radar, and other systems that use signal processing and/or data acquisition and sampling.
