Engineering costs have traditionally been driven by project complexity and engineering productivity and include often hidden risks such as cancellation costs, cost of delays when behind schedule and lost revenues caused by the cost of missed windows of opportunity. Companies are finding solutions to these issues and reducing their risks with an approach called Product Line Engineering (PLE). This paper presents real-world evidence that the addition of up front modeling and PLE deliver a 62% reduction in total development cost and 23% more projects are delivered on time compared to typical systems engineering endeavors.
