This paper discusses the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON), a Fiber to the Home (FTTH) broadband access network standard designed to meet the needs of carriers world-wide. “GE-PON” is being deployed in high volume in Asia, while the GPON standard will provide similar capabilities for carriers in North America.

The technology has many of the ingredients of market success — a consumer base that is eager to adopt a much faster and more comprehensive set of high-speed services; a set of carriers ready to offer those services, as well as a silicon infrastructure; and system vendors that are capable of developing and deploying Gigabit PON technology. The paper explains how PMC-Sierra is leveraging its experience in GE-PON-based Gigabit FTTH in order to bring GPON-based products to market.
