All one has to do is to look to the media to determine that multicore is the hottest trend in the embedded space today. Multicore is challenging Linux for word count for the first time since Linux announced it was suitable for deployment in embedded devices. Every large semiconductor vendor has their own offering. New vendors have sprung up with their multicore architecture offerings. The question is: why are embedded device manufacturers becoming so enamored with multicore devices? This paper explores the factors driving vendors to multicore architectures and discusses the advantages of multicore development.
