Digital Video Coding Standards in Handheld Systems
Accompanying the emergence of color displays and embedded cameras in handheld systems are several video coding standards. Many systems use H.263 or MPEG-4, and many future systems are anticipated to use H.264. This paper describes capabilities of the standards for related applications, explains the key underlying technique (motion estimation) and presents rules of thumb about video coding quality and complexity for low-power programmable processors in handheld system designs.
