A web service is a programmable entity that provides a particular element of functionality, such as application logic, and is accessible to any number of potentially disparate systems through the use of Internet standards, such as XML and HTTP. SOAP and WSDL make up the foundation that underlies web services, and the emergence of the .NET platform from Microsoft is quickly establishing SOAP and WSDL as industry standards. The paper discusses a general approach to deploying web services on embedded devices, highlighting some of the challenges and difficulties. In addition, the paper covers the advantages of making embedded devices web-service enabled and examines the potential industry uses of such devices.
