Even as cameras in mobile devices have improved in resolution and performance, they have been stymied by the form-factor limitations that are inherent in the devices themselves. However, the increase in available computational power offers a solution: that is, to process the images from the camera in novel ways to match the capabilities of dedicated cameras, and also exceed those capabilities by performing new ways of image capture that cannot be accomplished with traditional cameras. This white paper examines the current status of photography in mobile devices and highlights the trends that are being explored with selected examples. Finally, it discusses the requirements to implement the advances to come.
