There are many reasons to store data: to save files and preserve efforts, to create back-ups and protected copies, to collaborate and share networked files, to ensure that work will still be accessible after disaster strikes. There are unique challenges and opportunities in protecting data in cloud, virtual, and data storage networks, and having processes in place is an important consideration for any network engineer. This paper details the trends and difficulties for protecting and preserving data. It also explores the differences between protection versus preservation, and backups versus archives.
