Build Vs. Buy: Custom, COTS, and Caveats
In designing an embedded product, you have to make a fundamental decision—to build the components (subsystems) or to buy them. Custom design allows you to optimize the component or subsystem for a narrow set of requirements. Purchasing them, on the other hand, usually reduces the time to develop the product. These can be good reasons but there are other factors to consider when you decide between building a custom design and purchasing components or subsystems.
