An embedded system is a system that has intelligence built in for computing and decision making. These special purpose computing systems have tightly integrated hardware and software, connected to environment via actuators and sensors. As such, embedded systems are often invisible as they are encapsulated within larger systems. Intelligent environments become the intelligence to connect us with all things around us, whether it is at home, in cars, in hospitals, or in our clothes. This article discusses one such environment, energy management; examples of intelligent systems within the environment; and several scenarios which may become commonplace in the future.
