Smart module boosts power factor correction

South Portland, Maine& – Fairchild Semiconductor says its FSAB20PH60 smart power module (SPM) is the industry’s first to implement the so-called Partial Power Factor Correction Switching Converter (PSC) topology (power factor correction circuit operating at twice the mains frequency). This PFC-SPM module, which finds particular advantages in 1-3 kW air conditioners, triggers its IGBTs every half cycle of the line current to provide 0.97 power factor correction in compliance with IEC61000-3-2, and, according to the company, better characteristics for rejecting EMI (electromagnetic interference) than higher frequency switching topologies.
