Dual-phase controller raises the Hammer

Sunnyvale, Calif – Maxim Integrated Products’ MAX8760 is a dual-phase, step-down controller that (with external MOSFETs) powers up AMD 9G and AMD Hammer CPU cores. The MAX8760 is intended for two types of CPU core applications: stepping down the battery directly, or stepping down a 5-volt system supply to create the core voltage. The chip’s single-stage converter allows this device to directly step down high-voltage batteries at high efficiency. Alternatively, it uses a two-step conversion at a higher switching frequency (thus minimizing device size) to step down the 5-volt system supply.
