There’s surprising innovation in the latest burst of brick-style (i.e., isolated) DC/DC converters. The last generation’s quarter-bricks approached the capabilities of old-line half-bricks, and half-bricks did the job of three-quarter bricks. This generation’s eighth-bricks eye the basic capability of half-bricks, and on up the line. More converters are suited to power-over-Ethernet (PoE) and the high-voltage requirements of RF amplifiers and industrial applications. Digitally-based control systems are making a move, and “green power” is more important.
