Modern industrial motor drive control is more efficient and protected when done using current sensors. Applications are requiring higher currents to act on larger loads; therefore, the current sensing technology used must provide very low insertion resistance and smart short circuit and over-current detection.

This paper provides some background on the underlying principles of motor control, identifies the switching technology implemented to reduce switching losses, examines the various current sensor options available for industrial drive control and ultimately provides a clear recommendation.
