There are three layers of connected networks to consider with the introduction of smartphone apps, which allow remote access home automation devices: the wide area network (WAN), the local area network (LAN) or "home network"; and personal area network (PAN) end-node devices. When working with these varied communication pathways, such issues as security attack threats, cryptographic computation power, available network bandwidth, available code space, firewall policies, and efficient battery operation must be considered. This paper provides an overview of Z-Wave's Security 2 (S2) framework, and how it provides best-in-class security between the WAN, LAN and PAN, while maintaining the user friendliness and power efficiency for which Z-Wave is so well known.
