Building Complex GUIs for Low-end Embedded Systems
Graphics and Graphical User Interface (GUI) development for embedded systems has hit a crossroads. The availability of cheap memory and powerful processors has raised the bar for "high-end" embedded systems such as PDAs, cell phones, hand-held games and portable medical instruments. These systems now have the memory and compute power needed to deploy sophisticated, complex and high performance GUIs. While high-end systems are pervasive, there still exists an endless need for "low-end" systems in high-volume, low-cost markets ranging from automobile dashboard information displays to wristwatches. The GUI development crossroads exists because there is an expectation to provide the same level of sophisticated GUIs in the low-end devices that are found the high-end systems. This paper explores techniques for building sophisticated GUIs in low-end embedded systems.
