From the inception of the Internet, mobility for broadband data has always been a vision for both end-users and service providers. From the end-user's perspective the demand is global mobile access to broadband data in a wireless ubiquitous environment with limitless applications support. Ongoing work in the standards body IEEE and the industry forum WiMAX are actively supporting these visions. Members of the IEEE 802.16 working group are using every effort to utilize the latest technology and lesons learned to publish a concrete standard, revision "e" of 802.16. In this paper, we address the technical attributes of revision "e" of IEEE 802.16 that provides foundation to build and design mobile broadband networks. We also examine the role of adaptive beam forming with the AAS option in delivering the capabilities required to make mobile broadband possible.
