Several options are available for storing programs and data in modern computing devices. These storage options include hard disks, floppies and tape drives. While mechanical storage options still have the edge in both capacity and cost, solid-state memories have significant advantages in other areas. Besides being quieter, lighter and smaller, solid-state storage devices stand up better to shock, vibration and temperature variations than do conventional disk drives. Solid-state memories also offer lower startup and steady state power consumption than mechanical drives.
