Home appliances, electric vehicles, entertainment devices, and even toys, rely on motors as their primary source of energy. The choice of components used in AC and DC motor control can have a profound impact on the efficiency and power consumption of the end product. This class demonstrates how to design a power-efficient motor control solution leveraging a mixed-signal FPGA. It shows designers how to take advantage of an integrated analog front-end, high-speed flash lookup tables, and deterministic algorithm processing in a single-chip solution for a motor control application. Techniques for controlling PWM frequency, sensing and protecting the motor, real-time system monitoring, damping and multiple drive support are also be discussed.
