The IGBT—Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor—is a switching component used to control power for a wide variety of loads such as motors, induction heaters, power inverters, and power supplies. It has some similarities with the other commonly used switching element, the MOSFET, but also key differences.

“Fundamentals of Understanding and Applying IGBTs” will examine the basic operation of the IGBT, and briefly compare and contrast it to the MOSFET. The course will then look it key performance parameters, drive issues, operating frequency, selection criteria, cost issues, and the critical thermal and packaging issues. It will minimize discussion of device structure and physics, and focus on the IGBT mostly as a three-terminal “black box” which controls the on/off flow of power to loads which can range up to the thousands of volts and hundreds of amps.
