adaptive filter will variable sampling frequency

I have an adaptive filter in my system. the sampling frequency is very low normally because of some power limitation but it can just fast enough to adapt the normal operation. However, the signal change rapidly once a while and the filter fail to adapt the change. my system is able to run in a higher sampling frequency but it will take more power. is there any filter type which have variable frequency so that the system can change the sampling frequency to higher when it detect the signal change bigger than the adaptable level?
