I don't believe Apple is trying to drive up anticipation to feverish levels ahead of formal product announcement events. That's not what the secrecy is about.

The reason for that secrecy is Microsoft. They try to copy everything that Apple does. Windows is nothing more than a copy of OS X. There is the Zune. Now we even see them copying Apple's retail stores. Copying is their game. That's what they do. That's all they do. For a more in depth explanation see Larry Ellison's video (Oracle CEO) here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssX4RL24HT4

Since Microsoft is waiting patiently to find out what to copy next, Apple is smart to delay release of that info as long as possible. That's how they manage to stay two to four years ahead of Ballmer and company. It's so much easier to copy than it is to innovate.

Hi,
You are right that Apple is concerned about Microsoft. Who wouldn't be considering the financial resources Microsoft can bring to the table when it wants to push a product. However, while the secrecy approach may be working for Apple now it is also ticking off others who currently support the company or who offer design services to Apple suppliers. Apple is also notorious for its aggressive stance with suppliers and contractors. As Dell found out, this can prove problematic for the company later. Beware who you step on as you ascend, you may later need them.

The point of the article is that suppliers, contractors and designers need Apple. The company is innovative and successful so many wants to ride its coat tails to success. To do this, they need intelligence about Apple and if the company won't offer them this promptly, then they need to develop alternate sources.

Maybe it is something in concert with the Beatles release on 09-09-09. White Album references not withstanding, the real question is why do we care? I find Apple to be quirky and arrogant in a weird sort of way. I understand they have legions of the faithful and they've marketed some good ideas. I find no reason to buy proprietary software/hardware. It's like buying an old Schwinn bicycle. Nothing fits from other brands and you can only buy their limited availability parts. Bad business model in my mind but Apple's pulled it off. Good for them and I wish them well. The only apple branded items I have are vinyl disks with funny little grooves in them.
