In recent years, LCD display interfaces on mobile handsets have been migrating from parallel RGB or CPU interfaces to high speed serial interfaces. Two of the most commonly adopted high speed serial interfaces are MDDI (Mobile Display Digital Interface) and MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface). As of today, most Qualcomm baseband processors (used on many WCDMA phones) are equipped with MDDI ports, able to interface with either MDDI-based displays or cameras. However, only a few MDDI displays are available on the market for handset manufacturers to choose from. On the other hand, the MIPI display interface is more widely adopted by CPU manufacturers such as Intel and Marvell, offering more display choices. The availability of MDDI host processors and MIPI display clients certainly creates an opportunity for handset manufacturers to put together a viable product if only these two interface standards could be bridged.
