Since its introduction, High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) has become the digital interface of choice for manufacturers of high definition consumer electronics. This standardized interface represents a means for communicating multimedia content from any HDMI-enabled source to an HDMI-enabled sink. As a standardized interface, HDMI allows consumers to use a variety of sources/sinks/cables from various manufacturers in a single multimedia setup.

In spite of its many advantages, however, there are significant challenges in installing HDMI, especially over the longer distances typical in custom installations. This paper discusses those challenges and introduces a solution: Gennum's ActiveConnect technology. ActiveConnect offers the benefits of long reach, along with the ability to support full HDMI 1.3 for the latest HD features, such as higher resolutions, refresh rates, and greater color depths.
