This paper describes a novel, compact wide band probe-fed microstrip patch antenna (MPA) operating at 2.4 GHz. band, for Wireless LAN applications. The novel design is achieved by etching out a pattern of diamond-shaped slots from the surface of a square probe-fed patch. The proposed design offers wideband characteristics together with a size reduction in patch area. The characteristics of the antenna are obtained in terms of return loss, impedance, gain and pattern using IE3D, and a commercial full wave simulator based on Method of Moments (MOM). This paper also describes a built and tested prototype with dimensions based on the simulations. A comparison between the measured and simulated results is presented.
