An 'intelligent green building' is defined as one that optimizes personal productivity and comfort, cost efficiency, environmental awareness, and energy-conservation. These features require numerous devices serving as intelligent sense organs; devices that take the form of sensor networks, installed with wireless radio technology to ensure mobility and flexibility. The EnOcean standard provides a technological foundation for such systems, making intelligent green buildings possible. Its "battery-less radio sensors" run on energy collected from the environment (such as indoor lights, slight temperature differences, or vibrations) and processed by highly efficient energy converters.

This paper describes the advantages of using EnOcean technology for wireless sensor networks, including health benefits, conservation of resources, and energy and cost savings.
