Ericsson Power Modules

Growing concerns about energy conservation and reduction of CO2 emissions have led power supply manufacturers to launch a number of projects aimed at reducing their impact on the environment. One of these undertakings is the development of efficient power conversion systems driven by digital technologies, which provide the foundation for 'digital power solutions.'

Some view the approaching transition from analog to digital as a dramatic technological revolution; others claim that digital power is nothing new and will do little to change the industry. This paper examines the debate at close range and argues that neither of these positions is true; that the shift to digital will be neither devastating nor insignificant, but rather a simultaneously transformative and smooth transition resulting in the harmonious coexistence of digital and analog. The paper also examines the effects of the migration on the power industry as a whole, which will be forced to consider new methods of operation and ways to standardize digital power.
