PCI and H.110 are the most widely standard interconnect architectures for communications equipment. These standards-based solutions benefit from compatibility across vendor platforms and can achieve low cost through high volume. PCI is well-supported in both the hardware and software space and, in traditional TDM circuit switched systems, a standard like H.100 can provide benefits similar to those of PCI.

The disadvantage of these standards lies in their inherent limitations in terms of scalability and robust feature sets that support the increasing demands of next-generation communication equipment. This paper addresses the current limitations of the PCI and H.110 standards and offers guidance for developers dealing with the challenges of standards-based technologies.
