With the advent of mobile personal digital assistants (PDAs), venders and portals are focusing on platform-independent technology that can efficiently provide users with fast, up-to-date Internet service. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is designed to provide wireless applications with a scalable and extensible protocol stack to deliver HTTP/TCP/IP-based Internet content to mobile devices. Short Message Service (SMS) is available as well, providing wireless portals with a legacy approach over wireless networks.

Both WAP and SMS provide environments for the development of wireless applications. A scalable wireless portal architecture is now needed to support Internet service on mobile devices. This paper introduces both the WAP model and application environment and the SMS architecture, and proposes a scalable, multi-tier architecture for a wireless portal (SMART).
