The most significant parameters in power-supply design are cost, efficiency, output ripple, and noise. In regard to portable devices, consumers also expect small sizes and longer battery life, both of which require maximum power efficiency throughout an entire system.

A highly efficient DC-DC converter is essential to meeting these demands in any portable design. This paper introduces the AS1329 from austriamicrosystems, which addresses this need by integrating a fixed frequency, internally compensated synchronous boost converter in a thin, three-by-three millimeter, six-pin small outline transistor (SOT) package. Its 1.2MHz switching frequency and integrated features minimize the overall footprint and support the use of tiny, low profile inductors and ceramic capacitors.
