Linux is a great general-purpose embedded kernel, but it requires some care to be used in real time applications. This paper presents an overview of several approaches to using Linux in real time applications, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Various real- time Linux enhancements are discussed, including RTLinux, RTAI and Xenomai.
