Currently available wideband speech-coding capabilities promise to substantially improve the quality of speech communication in comparison to traditional telephony. The naturalness and increased sense of presence enabled by wideband speech coding are significant features both for next-generation high-fidelity telephony and for enhancing telecommunications services such as audio/audio-visual teleconferencing, streaming and messaging. With the advent of ubiquitous end-to-end digital communication over broadband Internet access, 2.5G/3G mobile networks and VoIP networks and the availability of optimized standard coder/decoder (codec) implementations on popular handset processors, such as those based on the ARM architecture family, the foundation stones for the rollout of high-fidelity telephony have been firmly set in place.
