High-definition (HD) video is growing rapidly in the home and there is increased demand for access to video "on the go" and across different domestic devices, requiring that video content be adapted to target displays that may not even support standard-definition (SD) resolution. These trends have created the need for local transcoding between compression formats in order to adapt HD video for storage on different media and for sharing with other playback devices using different formats.

The demand for multi-format support in consumer video systems calls for media processors that provide optimized decoding, encoding and transcoding. Texas Instruments high-performance TMS320DM64x digital media processors and DaVinci technology offer a combined hardware-software platform designed to support transcoding within the system cost constraints of consumer video systems.
