In this paper, we examine the power requirements of telematics and infotainment systems, discuss the applicability of current standards, and explore alternate approaches that move control of power consumption out of the OS and into the hands of the application developer. Through such "application driven" approaches, developers can create power policies that address external events unanticipated by existing standards, including events "invisible" to the OS. Moreover, developers can define a superset of the power states supported by existing standards and thereby achieve finer-grained control over the power states of each peripheral. Through this precise control, developers can allow a greater number of devices to draw on a limited power supply, while achieving faster response times and addressing a wider range of operational scenarios.
