The increasing demand for Internet access requires remote access server (RAS) equipment manufacturers to dramatically increase the density of their equipment. This is being facilitated by a new generation of DSPs with integrated Voice, Fax, and Data over Packet software that offers unprecedented processing power while providing very low power consumption. The availability of field-proven, hardened voice, fax, and data over packet software enables equipment manufacturers to focus on higher levels of product differentiation.

This paper discusses how the convergence of voice and data has resulted in a new generation of RAS equipment that provides universal port capabilities. The adoption of a true universal port solution, instead of a traditional dedicated voice, fax, and modem solution, will reduce the overall transition cost to Service Providers who wish to offer combined voice, fax, and data solutions.
