Under the Hood On-Demand Seminar: Counterfeit parts, legitimate woes

Overview:

In an alarming trend for the semiconductor industry, counterfeit parts are rising, chiefly from China. One of the reasons that counterfeit devices have been proliferating is the increased interest in consumer electronic products. In this space "cost is king" where lowering the bill of materials, even by a few cents, can have a drastic effect on margins and revenue. Counterfeit suppliers are willing to offer components at a lower cost than their competitors, which is appealing to OEMs, particularly smaller companies that do not have agreements with the manufacturer itself. The drawback is that, in exchange for a reduced cost, the parts may not function as they are supposed to.

This unreliability is a crucial safety concern. What if a part fails to control temperature in a system and it goes on fire? What if it fails in an automobile? The scenarios are myriad. Also, along with the financial cost to the original manufacturer comes the affect on their reputation.

The problem is that counterfeiting devices is relatively easy to do. Semiconductor Insights examined some recent memory chips ordered from overseas and discovered that they were indeed counterfeit.

Use this OnDemand seminar to find out:

  • Which chips were found to be counterfeit.
  • How the counterfeiting was done.
  • What techniques can be employed to prevent counterfeiting.
  • And much more!

Who should attend:
Designers of any electronic systems, especially those heavily dependent on components from China.
