Overview:
With the Cell processor playing the lead, high-performance graphics engines in support and advanced interface and display technologies in the wings, Sony's Playstation 3, Nintendo's Wii and the Xbox 360 Elite have driven video-game platforms to the cutting edge of consumer electronics design. So much so, that it is only through a nostalgic look back at the early days of gaming platformsspecifically the Atari 2600 from 1986that one can appreciate just how far gaming has come.
Semiconductor Insights' Greg Quirk took apart his old Atari 2600 (albeit reluctantly) and dove into what was then the leading edge of gaming design, though it would be considered quaint by today's standards. Atari would soon be dethroned from the number one spot by Nintendo in the opening salvo of a fight for dominance that would propel gaming to thousand-fold improvements in performance. Still, the Atari for many is where it all began.
View this OnDemand to compare the current state of the art in gaming-platform design to one of the original mass-market platforms. Specifically, this seminar will show:
- What component choices were made across all four platforms to balance performance and cost.
- To get a fuller appreciation of how gaming has evolved
- How Atari's platform eventually got integrated onto two chips
- And much more!
Who should attend:
Designers of high-end consumer electronic systems, in particular, those focused on gaming. Also, anyone who started gaming in the 'early days'.
